3. Making Calls & Sending Texts
Calls & texts in NZ
To make calls in NZ numbers, dial the NZ numbers directly. Not prefixes are required.
Calls & texts to Australia
To make calls to Australian numbers whilst in the NZ, dial the Australia prefix +61 followed by the Australian mobile number without the 0 (first digit). Eg. +61 432 123 456.
Note: If incorrect dial out codes are used, you will receive a nil balance/top up message - This is because the network does not recognise the location of the number you're dialling. It does not mean you've run out of credit.
Receiving calls & texts from Australia
Your friends and family can call and text your assigned NZ mobile number by dialling the NZ prefix +64 followed by your NZ mobile number without the 0 (first digit) Eg. +64 234 567 890. Incoming calls are free for you. If the person calling you does not have free calls to NZ numbers as part of their plan, they may be charged international calling rates.
4. Checking Balances
The easiest way to monitor data usage is via your phone's network settings. There should be a data tracker which lets you know how much data has been used since inserting the SIM.
The other method is to register an account with 2degrees NZ after successful activation of your SIM card. You will need to sign up and login at: https://www.2degrees.nz/2d/mobile/common/login/login.jsp
5. FAQs
Q. I am traveling for more than 30 days. Can the NZ SIM be recharged?
A. You can top up online or by using 2degrees Mobile App. You can also recharge over the phone by dialling 201 from your mobile and following the prompts. You can also recharge in any of 2degrees' retail stores. https://www.2degrees.nz/store-locator
Q. I have run out of data. Can I top up/add more data?
A. Yes data top ups is possible. It's $10NZD for each 500MBs (quite expensive). We recommend buying multiple SIMs and staggering use if more data is required.
Q. Can I use my NZ SIM on a cruise?
A. Cellular coverage depends on your vicinity to network towers. At open sea, when you're outside range of network towers, cellular signal may be weak or not available.
Q. Can I forward calls from my Australian number to my NZ mobile number?
A. You will need to check with your Australian carrier if they allow call diversions to international numbers. This is because anyone calling you may not be aware they're being diverted to an international number, which may cost them.
Q. I have activated my SIM, calls and texts are working but data is not working?
A. If calls and texts are working but data is not. Please check that the APN your device has automatically configured to is correct. https://www.2degrees.nz/help/mobile-help/getting-started/mobile-settings
